Dan Walsh

April 5, 2012

Christophe Daviet-Thery would be delighted to welcome you to the next exhibition by Dan Walsh  Time Trials

at the gallery on 20th April – 26th May, 2012.

“Time Trials” is a new handmade artist book by Dan Walsh. It exists somewhere between a document and a fantasy reading of his experimental show of the same title. First shown in Amsterdam at Slewe Gallery in the Fall of 2011, the show will be re-created at Christophe Daviet-Thery editions to make a context to view the book. There are 30 in the edition with 5 AP’s.
Although best known for his process oriented abstract painting, this is Walsh’s eigth experimental installation.  In “7 Grays” at Paula Cooper Gallery, NYC, Synagogue de Delme and CCNOA, Brussels, with Olivier Mosset, Walsh has investigated the pyschological parameters of the perceptual act. In “Time Trials,” he continues his interest in occupying the field of the spectator. He assembles a collection of objects and visual aides (found and made) creating scenarios or concentrated tableaux to help look at, and think about the subject of time. It is as experiential as it is reflective. “The set-ups” include everyday mechanisms of marking time – clocks and metronomes, as well as complex concepts like cultural cycles and interior time. One views these subjects through optical devices, such as a camera lense or a teleidoscope. And, historical frames, like a sepia film gel or a tragic mask. It is encyclopedic in its references and contexts, seemingly didactic in its use of tripods and maps, but deceptive in its inconclusiveness.
